In the morning Kagome and Shine woke bright and early. While he wolfed down his putrescent fish in a few stomach-churning chomps beyond the trees, she grimaced over her own bowl of breakfast. Shaking water from his hair, he returned fresh-faced from a plunge in the creek, and together they finished off the rest of the miso simmering over the coals. They collected an outstanding bounty from the village they’d been heading to a few miles north, and finally, they set off for the East.
Phasing between hanyou form and human form, Shin cartwheeled ahead of her like a wagon wheel on the fritz, his aura glowing red then blue by turns. Needless to say, he was excited at the prospect of visiting the Modern Era.
“I forgot about cheeseburgers!…and hot dogs!…and pizza!…and ice-cream!”
Kagome smiled. “That all?”
“And donuts!”
“Yeah?”
“And hot chocolate!”
“Okay…?”
“And chocolate cake, and chocolate-chip cookies,” he said as he lapped her, still cartwheeling. “And chocolate bars and chocolate milk and chocolate—”
“Easy, tiger,” Kagome laughed, throwing out a hand as he went to lap her again. “I get the drift.”
Inuyasha had a sweet tooth, but Shin’s was an area of mild concern. For Kami’s sake, he was this fired-up just from thinking about sugar. Not for the first time, Kagome wished she had an inuyoukai parenting guidebook at hand to tell her if this was a perfectly normal adolescent phase or not.
One thing did trouble her, however. One thing that struck more at her motherly intuition than anything.
There was one form among Shin’s four that he didn’t assume.
When he was finally old enough to understand what she meant by it, she put the question to him as to why, and he shrugged and said, “I don’t like it.”
“Why?”
“My senses are sharper,” he said, frowning, “but my feelings are dull. I’d have to feel something really strongly to feel anything at all.”
This had pulled at the chords of Kagome’s heart in more ways than one.
Most of all she worried for her son, growing older without his father to guide him. When he was younger, she hadn’t been so concerned. But now that he was beginning to show the first inklings of adolescence, she worried.
She worried that he didn’t seem to worry over finding his father like she did.
Shin left off with the cartwheeling and phased into his silvery-white beast form. He loped along beside her, bigger than a horse now. His fleet, cloud-winged feet didn’t so much as skirt the ground. With each bound, he launched ahead of her and drew back in a ghostly, gliding stride.
On this untamed stretch of road, there was little risk of startling any unsuspecting passersby. So when Shin bristled and crashed his claws to the earth abruptly, Kagome was caught by surprise. Until a second later, she sensed what Shin had scented just ahead of her—
The unmistakable, familiar signature of a demon.

Papa’s presence would complete this little family ❤️🥹 As parents Kagome and Sesshoumaru complement each other perfectly as the role models of Love and Discipline. Shin’s raised with a lot of Love, and I have no doubt one day he’ll be a greater man if he learns to instill the values of Discipline.
To Shin’s credit, at eight years old, he’s already a step above everyone else for embodying the central theme of the entire IY series that they took hundreds of episodes to learn – “Love” and “Something to Protect”
It’s amazing that so far we haven’t seen Shin cry or throw a single tantrum, even as a baby. Quite the opposite of what one would expect after the Western Lady mentioned the red crescent. I thought now he’d show hints of being more hotheaded or something.
But this pup’s just a hyperactive sugar addict 🤣
The fact that he doesn’t cry might also be a concern though. . . . medically. . . if he wasn’t part demon 😅

Do they only search through the countryside? It makes sense that they wouldn’t easily find the daiyoukai hangouts through mortal travelling ways, but like… SEVEN YEARS. Either Kagome just sucks THIS bad at tracking or the youkai who know where to find him are avoiding her too. Is Toutousai’s banishment still on? He at least knows how to get to the demon courts. Something’s definitely up. 😂
