Spring approached. 

The air warmed. The days grew longer. The ground thawed and greened, and the birds began to sing. Earth, sky and sea, the world around teemed with fresh new life. 

But Kagome remained frozen, stuck in the neverending winter of her melancholy.

Her eyes saw. Her ears heard. Her senses perceived. But in her abiding state of numbness, none of these perceptions penetrated. Like the warmth of the sun on her skin, the sensation was only superficial, only ever skin-deep.

It seemed to Kagome that her heart had left her. It had gone away, embarking on its own quest for meaning. Leaving the shell of her behind, her heart ranged on, ever-seeking. Every now and then it sent word back to her, to let her know it was still there, but so far its search had turned up empty.

Kagome’s only solace was her baby. Even in his human form, Shin was regularly taking to his feet now, using whatever was handy to support his walking efforts. He’d even begun to take a few brave toddling steps on his own. His baby gibberish had become more intelligible, taking on patterns and shapes which Kagome realized with a leap of heart were the beginnings of words. Tears misted in her eyes the first time he raised his pudgy little arms to her and chirped, “Kaa kaa!”

“That’s right, baby,” Kagome gushed as she scooped him up, kissing his soft little round cheeks until he’d had enough of it and began to squirm. “Kaa-san—that’s me.”

Kagome was so overwhelmed with motherly pride and joy at this first discernible utterance that she temporarily forgot her own desolation. A few more times that day, Shin chirped kaa again, and her heart leapt each time. It was all she could do not to smother him with hugs and kisses in return.

The moment Inuyasha crossed the threshold, Kagome rushed over to him, bursting at the seams to share the good news. At this unusual display of enthusiasm, Inuyasha eyed her a bit warily, as if she were manic. But Kagome couldn’t have cared less.

“Shin said his first word today!”

Inuyasha arched a brow. “Really?”

“Yes!” Kagome blurted, beaming back at Shin with adoration. “He said kaa.”

“‘Kaa’?” Inuyasha’s dark brows furrowed. “But that’s not a word. It doesn’t mean anything.”

“It’s short for ‘Kaa-san,’ obviously,” Kagome said impatiently. “That’s what I call myself sometimes when I talk to him. He can’t say the whole thing yet, but it’s a start.”

Inuyasha remained skeptical. Eager to prove her point, Kagome crossed over to Shin, who was sitting on a blanket and working very intently trying to fit various shaped toy blocks into a wooden frame. It was clear he didn’t wish to be disturbed in this important task, but Kagome took the toy from him anyway. Shin gave her a disgruntled look. Kagome smiled down at him fondly.

“Go on, baby—say ‘Kaa-san.’”

“Kaa!” Shin piped out at once, reaching.

“See?” Kagome said excitedly, turning back to Inuyasha. “He just said it.”

“I think he just wants his toy back. It’s not much different from going, ‘Waah!’”

Frustrated, Kagome argued back, “Yes, it is. It’s completely different! He never used to say ‘kaa’ like that before.”

Inuyasha came over to the tatami platform, extending a clawed hand. “Gimme that toy.”

Kagome handed it up to him. Shin’s blue eyes dogged the toy’s course as she did. Inuyasha knelt down before Shin, holding the blocks just out of reach of his chubby little hands.

“You want this?” Inuyasha said, jiggling the blocks in their frame.

Beaming up at him, Shin said emphatically, “Kaa!” Then— “Kaa kaa kaa!”

Inuyasha handed the toy back to him as Kagome frowned aside. “Hey,” he said, rubbing her between the shoulders, “don’t feel bad. It may not be ‘Kaa-san’ he’s saying, but it’s still cute. He’ll get there soon enough.”

Kagome nodded gloomily. “I know.”

Inuyasha’s hand fell to her hip. Side-hugging her to him, he nuzzled at her ear.

“Maybe we’ll have another one soon.”

Kagome stiffened against him. “Another what?”

“Another baby, what else?” Drawing back from her, Inuyasha tipped up her chin so that their eyes met. “Don’t you want that?”

Shaking her head, Kagome pulled away from him. Hugging Shin from behind while he played with his blocks, Kagome buried her face in his feathery dark hair and breathed him in.

“I don’t want another baby. I only want him.”

Inuyasha’s eyes rested heavily on her. “…Okay,” he said, his voice hardening defensively with every syllable. “But it might be too late for that, you know.”

All the warmth Kagome’d felt had gone away. The cold chasm inside her yawned open again. Because she knew for a fact that it wasn’t.

  2. Oh, my. I wonder if she’s thinking of her body rejecting Inuyasha and thinking she couldn’t be pregnant…but not thinking about the possibility of pregnancy from her time with Sesshoumaru. Either it’s wishful thinking or Inuyasha senses something she doesn’t. I can’t wait for the next chapter, but have a fantastic wedding and honeymoon! Be safe!

  13. If she is premgnat then Sesskag are gonna have a pair of Irish twins (assuming she wants to keep the pregnancy in the end). Her last sentence might also mean that she’s been purifying herself – or she IS GOING to purify herself, and that might be the event which triggers the big fight we’ve been waiting for. Hoo boy 🥴

  17. I’m guessing that in that moment Inuyasha was comparing her to Sango again. He probably wants multiple children too, and honestly he does fit as the ‘father of a village’ type. (Too bad for him that Kagome’s body only accepts one person 😶)
