SessKag Series: The Pact, Part 82

This entry is part 82 of 174 in the series The Pact [Ongoing]

As a village priestess, Kagome had been around a lot of babies. If she put her mind to it, there were certainly a few things about Shin that struck her as not exactly ‘normal’ for a human infant fresh out of the womb.

He was very quiet for one thing. Instead of wailing, he just gave whimpery little cries for attention. More often than not though, he was calmly silent, watchful. And that was another thing that struck her as strange—how aware he seemed of his surroundings. She had the uncanny impression that he understood a great deal more about the world around him than a newborn typically would. And whatever he didn’t grasp, he was trying actively to puzzle out.

He seemed bizarrely coordinated for a newborn baby. He was constantly reaching out with his tiny hands, kicking out with his tiny feet—not at random, but with some clear objective in mind. Like her dress that was in the way or a strand of hair that was tickling him. It was the sort of behavior she’d have expected a few months on, not a few days.

When she thought of this, along with his early arrival, it was somewhat unnerving. But she forced herself not to dwell upon it. What was the point, anyway? Shin was going to be however he was going to be. He wasn’t human, no matter how ‘human’ he seemed at present.

There was more to her baby than met the eye—this much she knew.

It wasn’t long before the visitors started trickling in, bearing gifts and well-wishes to disguise their curiosity. By some unspoken understanding, they’d given the new family a whole week to get settled. Kagome was honestly surprised, having expected maybe two days of peace at best.

Some of these visitors were more welcome than others. When a sour-faced Jakken arrived with an ornate chest in tow, Kagome’s expression was as dubious as his. Inuyasha’s nose wrinkled outright at the sight of him.

Opening the chest, Kagome gasped at what she saw gleaming beneath wrappings as feathery as moth’s wings. Hardly daring to touch it at first, she lifted out a miniature set of clothes—a snowy white haori emblazoned with blue flowers at its silken collar, the same rich shade of blue as the hakama sheening below. The clothes were clearly of immortal make, and very fine.

It was a princely gift.

Kagome’s awed gaze shifted to Jakken. She didn’t know what to say except a breathless, “Thank you.”

“Don’t thank me, woman,” Jakken groused back. “I’m only the messenger. Sesshoumaru-sama commissioned them from the Shinchuu.” When Inuyasha said, “Huh?” Jakken turned to him witheringly. “The Divine Silkworm—don’t you know anything?” At the sound of Inuyasha’s claws cracking into a fist, Jakken paled to a sickly pea-green. A drop of oily sweat beaded on his brow as his yellow eyes swiveled back to Kagome. “The clothes will grow with the boy, obviously, and protect him from most harms.”

This wasn’t at all obvious to Kagome, but she was more than willing to accept that these clothes were a rare and precious gift. Irrational as it was, she couldn’t help but feel a twinge of disappointment that Sesshoumaru hadn’t presented them himself. Pushing her misgivings aside, she nodded politely to Jakken all the same.

“Give him my thanks, won’t you?”

Eyeing the baby dozing at her breast with great skepticism, Jakken pursed his beaklike mouth. “Is that boy of yours even remotely youkai?” His black cap went slightly askew as he shook his head. “Why milord troubles himself with you humans and demi-humans I will never understand. But it’s not for me to question his whims.”

With that, the imp took his contemptuous leave.

  1. I wish something of Sesshoumaru would show up on this child. It is sickening to know how Kagome is getting away with this. Kagome reminds me of another woman I know who tried to take the secret to her grave but thank God for DNA and her 57 yr old secret came out to her son. And worst yet she might have another son by the same man but that son is to afraid to take the test…the idiot!

    1. Wow so salty and bitter… it’s just a story.

Thanks as always Char for another well written chapter! Can’t wait to see what happens next.

      1. So glad you enjoyed the chapter, friend!! Hope you enjoy the next! 🙂

        ❤❤

      2. That is some care Sesshomaru really is showing. He is trying to be his best to show his care and pride but not trying to go where he has been told not too. It must be killing him not to see his and Her son. Not to be the one in direct care of his family. He will be dragged in at some point to help I am sure once Shin starts really showing his Inu-Youkai whether or not it gives away his true parentage….

        1. Even with how annoying and intentionally ignorant this Kagome the way you write is always amazing!

    2. As the saying goes, the truth will out 😉

Hope you enjoy the rest of the story 💕

  2. Great chapter. I love the story. Yes, there is a lot of angst and we all want the truth to come out, but this is obviously well written and has a good flow.

    1. Thanks so much, Katherine! This fic is heavy on the angst for sure. Hope you continue to enjoy how the story unfolds 🙂

      ❤❤

  3. Hay Jakken , si supieras!!! …. De seguro adorarás como un tesoro a ese bebé. Y le dirás amito bonito muy 😀 felizmente.

  4. I have always always loved this story from its conception, even if it pulls me in all directions! I love that. And the suspense! You’re a truly amazing writer and storyteller. We do not deserve you – but am very happy you decide to share with us mortals 🖤🖤🖤

That said, I love that Sess is still trying to provide for his kid. I hope he isn’t disappointed at Shin being so human, but I get the feeling things will unravel soon (and I’m here for the drama lol).

    1. Aww thank you, Mecca! You’re so sweet 🥰

It’s so wonderful to hear how much you’ve enjoyed the story through the years, and Sesshoumaru’s gesture in this chapter as well 🙂 Thanks again for sharing your thoughts and kind words – appreciate it so much & hope you enjoy where the journey goes from here! ❤❤

  5. Jakken is such an annoying bitch. Always in somebody’s businesss. 😂 Like nobody asked him for his opinion. Just deliver the goods and be gone. I love the colors of Shin’s gift from Sesshoumaru by the way. It was described beautifully. I see certain behaviors of Shin are being noticed by Kagome as well. Only time will tell what comes of it!

    1. Haha, oh Jakken – gotta love him XD

So happy to hear you loved Shin’s gift! Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the scene, Blackberry!! <3
