Kagome sat up, staring down at her son. Lying curled between her and Sesshoumaru, Shin smiled toothily back. As in his humanoid youkai form, he had fangs and claws and an ethereal aura. But that was about where the similarities ended.
There was no ruff of silvery-white fur—no silveriness to him at all. No stripes or markings, either. His hair was as raven black as in his human form, though it looked a touch shaggier. Wilder, somehow. But wildest of all were the black pointed dog ears that peeked from his crown. Velvety and perked, the pointed ears swiveled, subtly and independently, as if of their own accord.
The dog ears should have been shocking enough. But what arrested Kagome the most—more than anything—were his eyes. They were round-pupiled like a human’s, but the color of his irises had changed. As though the blue had melded with the gold, his eyes gleamed up at her now in this strange new hybrid shade—a clear and luminous jade green.
“Oh, baby,” Kagome whispered, awed by the human expression beaming back at her in this uncanny new form of his.
She glanced to Sesshoumaru. He lay on his side, propped up on an elbow with his chin resting in his claws. Like her, he’d been studying Shin’s latest transformation. But his stoic attitude betrayed no surprise whatsoever.
“Have you seen him like this before?” she asked.
“No,” Sesshoumaru said.
“Geez,” Kagome grumbled, crossing her arms over her chest, “it really takes a lot to impress you, doesn’t it?”
Sesshoumaru glanced up at her. As his look traveled over her naked body in slow carnal appreciation, Kagome flushed.
“He’s half-demon,” Sesshoumaru said, meeting her eye at last. “This blending of forms is to be expected.”
“Oh.” Kagome’s shoulders dipped as she twitched a sheepish smile. “Well, when you put it that way, it does seem pretty obvious, I guess.”
Her eyes fell to Shin again. Content in this partial transformation, he’d begun to drowse. She was a bit sorry to see the curtains closing over those jade-colored eyes of his. They were so lovely to her.
“He seems really balanced in this form, doesn’t he?” she asked Sesshoumaru softly.
“Yes,” he replied. “Perfectly so.”
Kagome smiled over at him. Lying back down on her side, she tweaked at her son’s black velveteen ears. They twitched against her fingers as Shin cracked open a crotchety green-gold eye. Kagome giggled.
“Just like Inuyasha,” she said, before she could stop herself.
Kagome bit her tongue, her heart sinking straight through the floor. Here she was, lying naked in bed with Inuyasha’s half-brother and the issue of their deceitful union, and she had the audacity to utter his name. It was the height of disrespect to him—and to Sesshoumaru as well. Like rubbing salt into the wound.
Cursing herself for her tactlessness, Kagome pressed her fingertips to her lips and darted a glance at Sesshoumaru. But he didn’t seem perturbed in the slightest by her clumsy remark.
“No,” he said, “not like Inuyasha. Not like you or I, either.” His golden eyes rose to hers, and Kagome’s breath caught at the shimmer of unmistakable pride reflected there. “Our son is not like anyone.”
