Kagome sat by the crackling hearth after breakfast. Shin rolled around beside her on an old quilt her grandmother had made, basking in the glowing warmth of the coals. On the tatami platform by the bed, Inuyasha was getting ready to depart on another extermination mission. He threaded Tessaiga through his sash and leapt down.
“How long do you think you’ll be gone this time?” Kagome asked him.
Inuyasha shrugged. “A day at the most. Nothing too tricky about this one. Just a vengeful spirit running amok. We’ll probably have to wait ‘til nightfall to flush it out, that’s all.”
Kagome nodded slowly. Her heart pounded, knowing that the time had come. All of a sudden there was a painful lump in her throat. She swallowed past it and mustered her nerve.
“We won’t be here when you return.” As Inuyasha snapped his eyes to her and frowned, she said quickly, “I’m going back home for a few days. To my old home, I mean.”
Inuyasha’s brows remained deeply furrowed. “To the Modern Era? I thought you said it wasn’t safe for you to go back there.”
Kagome glanced away, unable to face him. “It’s been a few years now. I’m sure the heat has died down. Anyway, I’ll be smart about it. I’ll stay in the house and keep a low profile. I won’t even try to visit with my old school friends. Only Mama, Souta and Jii-chan will know I’m there.”
“I don’t know,” Inuyasha muttered. “I don’t like the sound of this.”
Kagome’s eyes strayed back to him. His arms were crossed, his silver ears lowered. He was frowning askance. She looked down at Shin, lying propped-up on his belly. His blue eyes peeped up at her. He smiled at her, and she smiled back. Her fingers skimmed through his soft dark hair, then smoothed down the quilt he’d rumpled.
“It’d be good for Shin, I think, to spend time with his other family. To bond with them.”
These words left her easily, because they weren’t even technically a lie. Inuyasha glanced over at her, still frowning.
“Well,” he said, after a moment, “I guess if worse comes to worst, I’ll just have to come over and bust you out.”
Kagome smiled faintly. Inuyasha grinned back. His golden eyes flicked to Shin.
“You’re sure he can go through the well, right?”
“Pretty sure,” Kagome said, although it was little more than an intuition. “I’ll take the vines down to the bottom, though, just in case.”
Inuyasha nodded. “Okay.”
He strode over, bent down and kissed her. He knuckled Shin lightly in the crown, then chuckled at the fierce little face he made.
“Have fun, little guy.” Inuyasha straightened and looked to Kagome. “Say hi to your folks from me.”
Kagome nodded to him as he left the house. Her heart clenched tightly in her chest. A knot of guilt that was slow to loosen. In its wake, a cold sort of numbness set in. She picked herself up and started to pack.

Confused a little. Is she really going home to the future or is this to get a way from Sesshoumaru? Love the story but I am very confused about this. Sesshoumaru would be in the future wouldn’t he? Questions Questions…
I think it is a way to get away from everyone, I think it’s also is a good excuse to see her family, I smell a bit confrontation happening on the way or there in the future….can’t wait 🙏

By ‘other family’ here I hope she means Sess 🫣 What ever she’s about to do I don’t think she’d leave Shin permanently in the Modern era or something like that? He’d outlive the Higurashi family long before he grows up. Also, I really hope she doesn’t separate Shin from his sire. They deserve to be in each other’s life.
