SessKag Series: The Pact, Part 85

This entry is part 85 of 174 in the series The Pact [Ongoing]

No longer agonizing that Kirara would spill her darkest secret, Kagome experienced a period of relative respite. It didn’t last long, however. In comparison to the stark distress she’d felt for herself and her son, her growing restlessness hadn’t registered. But now that the first threat had passed, she felt her irritations chafing more and more, like a relentless drag in her mind.

She’d been meek since Shin’s birth—first out of exhaustion, then out of dread. Now she could feel how prickly she was becoming, and it was setting Inuyasha on edge in turn. She didn’t like how she was feeling, but she couldn’t help it either. At first she’d been glad to be joined at the hip to him, but now that her various crises had passed, she was starting to find his constant presence grating.

Inuyasha wasn’t any happier being cloistered than she was. Unfortunately, he’d gotten it into his head since the birth that he needed to be by her side twenty-four seven, and so there he was. There they both were, stewing together in close quarters, growing increasingly annoyed with one another.

Everything Inuyasha seemed to do wore on her nerves. And he was always doing something—he couldn’t just sit still and be quiet. He’d either be griping, or scratching, or pacing, or just simply breathing, loudly and heavily. And to Kagome’s ears, resentfully

With diminishing tact, she’d tried to persuade him repeatedly to go out and get some air. She was pleading for space from him, really, and with narrowed eyes he’d deduced this, and taken offense at the suggestion.

“What am I, a pest to you?” he said acridly. “Last time I checked, I was still your husband who’s stuck by your side through thick and thin. But apparently my devotion doesn’t count for shit.”

“Inuyasha, please,” Kagome grit out. “You’re blowing this way out of proportion.”

“And you’re being an ungrateful nag!”

“Do I need to get down on my knees and grovel to you? You know very well I appreciate everything you’ve done for me!”

Inuyasha scoffed. “Yeah, right. Now that you’re feeling better, you just want me out of your hair.”

“Stop putting words in my mouth,” Kagome fumed.

“Stop being such a cunt then,” Inuyasha shot back.

Kagome stared at him, stricken. Inuyasha glared back at her, though there wasn’t any real heat behind it. From his crib in the corner, Shin began to whimper. When Kagome went to tend to him, Inuyasha glanced away. As she bundled Shin up, Inuyasha glanced back to her, still not quite meeting her eye.

“Where are you going?” he demanded gruffly.

“Out,” she snapped, fitting Shin to her chest in his carrier. “I could use some air, at least.”

Ears flat, he stood. “I’ll go with you.”

“I don’t want you to go with me,” Kagome said flatly. “Just leave me alone.”

She punctuated this with a warning burst of reiki. Hugging her arms around her fussing baby, she strode from the hut. Her agitation carried her across the village, well into the woods. She’d crossed two brooks before she had to sit down on a grassy bank to catch her breath, realizing just now how winded she was. She hadn’t exerted herself much since the birth. As her head swam, she feared she’d overdone it. It was a moment before she was able to tell that the glimmer she felt wasn’t just a shine of vertigo.

Kagome stood, hesitating. She glanced down at her son, whose blue eyes were wide as he took in the sights of the birds and the trees and the drifting clouds above. Her mind made up, Kagome ventured deeper into the heart of the forest.

The trees were bigger here, and closer, casting long shadows that seemed to dampen both light and sound. As Kagome wandered forward through this fey gloom, she spied him at last, reclining on an ancient bough. His snowy profile stood out like a sore thumb against the summery greens and golds. At the gnarled roots of the old tree, Kagome paused.

“Sesshoumaru,” she said, peering up at him.

His golden eyes slanted down at her briefly, before returning to some inscrutable point in the distance. Putting an arm around Shin, who was still gazing about in fascination, Kagome shifted awkwardly where she stood.

“Um, thank you, that day, for taking me to Kaede’s. I’m sorry that I was so difficult. And thank you, again, for the baby gift. It’s very lovely and thoughtful. I hope Jakken told you already how much I appreciate it.”

Sesshoumaru gave no reply.

“I wish you’d come by to give it yourself, though,” Kagome murmured. “I understand why you didn’t, of course, but I guess I still hoped that you would…”

When Sesshoumaru didn’t respond to this either, Kagome bit her lip. Dispirited, she looked down at her sandaled feet.

“I thought…well, I thought you might want to meet him. But—”

“What makes you think,” he said, each word colder than the last, “that I would wish to participate in such a spectacle?”

Kagome stiffened. He wasn’t looking at her. He didn’t seem to be looking at anything, yet his icy words pierced straight through her all the same.

“I told you I understood that,” Kagome said briskly, wincing as Shin tugged at her hair. “What I meant was that I thought you’d might like to meet him now. But if you don’t, that’s fine. To tell you the truth, I’ve taken enough licks for one day. I don’t need any more from you.”

With that, she turned promptly on her heel. Slipping down from his perch, Sesshoumaru blocked her way. Eyeing the baby at her chest for a moment, Sesshoumaru pulled him neatly from the carrier sling. Shin let go of her hair in surprise as Sesshoumaru held him aloft in a way Kagome found distinctly odd—one clawed hand at Shin’s nape and the other supporting him from below, as if he were an object the demon lord were appraising.

“How strange,” Sesshoumaru remarked lowly, after a while.

“That he’s human?” Kagome ventured, trying to parse his unreadable expression for signs of disappointment—or anything, really.

“That he’s mine,” Sesshoumaru said, with an assurance that seemed to echo through the depths of her soul.

  2. Hahaha…Sesshoumaru seems to want to deny him, maybe, he’s Inuyasha…hope not!

  3. My heart can’t take all the cuteness 😭! He’s stated his claim. I can’t wait to see how this meeting unfolds.

I’m wondering if Kiara can see what baby Shin truly is. Like he has a glimmer or cast hiding him. You know cats have a way of seeing unworldly things or maybe she can just sense the suppressed powers.

    1. So glad you enjoyed the scene, Mi!! 🥰

Yes, cats are mysterious creatures! 😉 Love hearing your thoughts on Kirara’s discovery – thanks for sharing & hope you enjoy the next chapter!! 💕

  4. This was one of my favorite interactions between Sesshōmaru and Kagome in this story so far. Both were really in character. This felt very true to Sess especially, like how he would react being salty, frustrated, angry,
and slighted while simultaneously curious and plagued with a desire to meet his child. Well done. Excited for the next chapter! I cannot tell you how often I refresh this page lmao. Since finding your blog updates for this story its been on my phone’s “most frequented sites” page 😂

    1. Thanks, Uissuteffu!! Honored to be in your frequented sites! 😊

So glad you enjoyed the interaction between Sess and Kags in this scene! I’d have to say it’s also one of my favorites for this story so far too – been itching to share it!

Hope you enjoy the next part 💕

  5. OMG PLEASE UPDATE SOON i usually don’t comment because my anxiety gets the best of me I found this on dokuga and flounder that the blog was much further ahead I read everything in one night 😭😭 these cliff hangers have me on edge I find my self refreshing hoping for a new chapter keep up the good work I definitely feel like inuyasha is being a bit dense and Kiara is such a good friend hopefully her and kagome can possibly chat or will she cross paths with sesshoumaru for more answers because she doesn’t know how to take shins origins

    1. Thanks so much, Mahaassin! So glad you’ve enjoyed reading the story here on the blog 😊

Love hearing your thoughts on the events thus far & hope you enjoy where things go for Kagome and Sesshoumaru from here! 💕

    2. This is one of my FAVORITE !! I check this story EVERYDAY and it’s getting better and harder for me to not read over it again lol !! Thank you so much for making my day AGAIN I can’t wait for the next chapter

  6. Don’t know what to think about this chapter. It’s wonderful of course, but the interaction is weird. I need more! Glad Sesshomaru got to meet his son. And i totally agree with him. Why would he participate in a fake spectacle where everyone thinks the kid is Inuyasha. It’s insulting

      1. Oh Kagome….honey…. Ya can’t keep streaming Sesshoumaru around and then expecting him not to be upset. She gonna give the poor dog lip lash with how hot and cold she is. At least he got to meet his son, although it’s sad he can’t father him, man! This story is a roller coaster for my poor emotions😆

Kagome’s guilt and self punishment is too much.

  7. I really wonder the thoughts and feelings going on in Sess’ head – and how eager he was to meet his child – which it’s for sure his, right? I hope 🤞🏼 You truly have a way with getting us on the edge of our seats and dying until the next update 😩😬🫠

    1. Thanks, Mecca! ❤❤

Will try not to leave you hanging in suspense for too long 😉

  8. Well so much for the baby bringing Inuyasha and Kagome closer together. Sesshomaru response is so on point, “What makes you think that I would wish to participate in such a spectacle?” Sesshomaru must have gotten into this being quite convinced that Kagome would chose him over Inuyasha. Thanks for another amazing cliffhanger, Char!

    1. Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts, Siomarabelle! So glad you liked Sesshoumaru’s line there 😊

      Have a great weekend! 💕

  9. Your descriptions are so vivid, so beautiful that I feel like I am in Kagome’s place.
Guilt can be a powerful thing, and I do wonder how long Kagome is going to last before it all blows up. She’s been silent for so long, I cannot imagine.

that last line killed me. there’s such certainty in his words. How he managed to stay way if beyond me, what a show of self control.

    1. Aww thank you so much 🥰

It’s true that guilt can be so overwhelming…thanks for sharing your thoughts on the scene and hope you enjoy where things go for Kagome & Sess from here! 💕

  10. My heart is going to explode. He actually claimed his child… and so casually 💀 Held his son up like well bred pup and was like, yep, that’s all me. 🤣

  11. Fine I love sesshoumaru he is the best he protect her for her own emotions and temper ilve how he stake his claim on his son ,
I do belive the baby has a cast thanks of the bird that will last as long as she ate the eggs

    1. Thank you, Mari! So glad you enjoyed Sess in this scene & hope you enjoy the rest of the story! ❤️😊

  12. I thought the same has BlackBerry. He was holding the baby like a puppy, not an item, to get a good look at him. I also want to know his thoughts…

    1. “He was holding the baby like a puppy, not an item, to get a good look at him” – ❤️ love this!

Hope you enjoy the next part, friend!!
