A beat of brittle silence passed.
“And?” Kohaku demanded as it broke. “What does that have to do with me?”
Kagome went red in the face. “It has everything to do with you! She’s carrying your child.”
Kohaku’s eyes flashed coldly. “Who’s to say? She threw herself at me so brazenly it begs the question.”
“Damn it, Kohaku, how can you be so cruel?” Kagome balled her hands in her sleeves to keep from striking him. “You know her. You know she only did that because she’s in love with you.”
“I told her to go,” he said, taking a stalking step toward her. “And she chose to stay. I never promised her anything, and she knows that.” His voice lowered. “But here you are, meddling again where you shouldn’t. You can’t help yourself, can you? You can’t help but try to impose your will on everyone around you.”
Kagome looked at him severely. “You have to take responsibility, Kohaku. Rin will be showing soon, and if Sesshoumaru learns—”
“Sesshoumaru.” Kohaku spat out the name like a curse. “Of course, that’s what this is all about…I should have known. All you care about is placating that murderous fiend.”
Kagome’s hackles rose. “Kohaku, don’t be stupid. Do you think he won’t come after you if he learns the truth? I’m trying to save your life, you stubborn brat!”
A dark angry red suffused Kohaku’s cheeks, the phantom traces of his freckles faintly showing. “Let him come for me, then. I’m not afraid.”
“Whether you’re afraid or not is beside the point!” Kagome exploded, at the end of her rope. “Are you that determined to martyr yourself over some grudge that has nothing to do with you? You need to do the right thing, here—you know that baby is yours. Are you really such a heartless prick that you’d leave Rin-chan to raise your child alone, in hardship and disgrace—”
Kagome’s voice choked off, unbidden. The momentary weakness was enough. With predatory raptness, Kohaku seized upon it, and was the ruthless taijiya captain once more.
“That is your fear,” he said, his words slicing through her, icy and sharp. “Not mine.”
In dismay, Kagome contemplated the shift that had transpired between them. Looking at him, at the hard dark eyes that stared back into hers, she felt that she stood on uneven ground. All the leverage was his, and he knew it. The longer the silence carried, the more she saw him as a man, and not a boy to be riled or cajoled.
Before her despairing eyes, his heart had turned to stone. No, this was not a boy—
This was a man with nothing left to lose.
“What will it take?” she asked him, struggling to keep the shrill note of desperation from her voice.
Without mercy, without hesitation, he replied, “I think you know.”
Kagome drew in a fraught breath, though she knew. Of course she did. Maybe on some level she had known from the start, and that was why she’d come here alone, and in secret.
There was a futon laying at the back of the room. She started toward it, before Kohaku’s voice arrested her again.
“No,” he said, pulling loose the sash at his waist. “Here will do. Get down on your knees, you whore.”
Shaking with impotent fury, Kagome glared up at him, and knelt.

God damn it. Kohaku is as loathsome as we all feared. How callous he is–though it is interesting to note that Kagome associates being a man with being selfish and heartless. Life has not been kind to her recently. Still, it seems like kind of a vague agreement. She gives him a blowjob and he…what? Becomes a dutiful husband to Rin? Supports her financially? Acknowledges the child as his? I feel like that should have been worked out before she got on her knees for him. As she’s learned from Sesshoumaru, there is no end to a man’s appetite.
It is interesting, that though Ren and Kohaku seem to regard Kagome’s activities with Sesshoumaru as whorish, I don’t get the impression that she ever saw it that way. In his own twisted way, Sesshoumaru has been respectful of her limits and allows Kagome to have some control over most of their encounters. Kohaku is like a little boy–he thinks calling a woman a whore and treating her like shit is what it means to be dominant and in control. But I don’t think that’s the kind of debasement Kagome wants (and certainly not from him). Still, it might provide an interesting contrast to her later encounters with Sesshoumaru.
Speaking of Sesshoumaru, he better be on his fucking deathbed somewhere. That is the only reasonable excuse for abandoning the woman he claims is his “mate” and his surrogate daughter when they are both in dangerous, perilous situations. It’s got to have been at least 40 or 50 chapters since we’ve seen him, which suggests to me that he no longer needs Kagome’s assistance in taming the beast. His savagery usually seems tied with her monthly cycle, so if he is able to stay away for so long their arrangement is likely no longer necessary. Considering how much Kagome has suffered in his absence and the danger both she and Rin have been in (which he could have easily spared them from), I hope she uses this knowledge to cut him dead the next time he comes sniffing around.
