SessKag Series: The Pact, Part 39

This entry is part 39 of 174 in the series The Pact [Ongoing]

The next morning, Kagome rose with renewed energy. Scarcely able to contain her enthusiasm, she hastened to get herself and Inuyasha fed and ready and out of doors—despite her husband’s excessive grumbling. Even the baby’s aura seemed to reflect her excitement. The glow in her belly was as incandescent as the one that lit her complexion. Beneath her eyes, the stubborn dark smudges seemed lighter as she put down the mirror and set about cleaning and straightening up the house—more to give herself something to do than because the tasks were pressing.

All the while, she kept her senses peeled. At the first whisper of his presence, she dropped her broom against the porch rail with a clatter. Hitching up the skirt of her yukata, she descended the steps two at a time. She cut a diagonal across the village square, headed straight toward the source of that familiar youki signature. Her pulse kicked up another notch as she caught sight of him at last, on the outskirts of town.

“Sesshoumaru!” she greeted with a wave.

A few startled chickens scattered before her in a flurry of feathers. At her hurried approach Sesshoumaru had paused. His brows were slightly drawn as she drew to a breathless halt before him.

“Kagome.” His glance swept over her, assessing. “Are you well?”

“Well enough,” she said, crooking a smile.

His golden gaze took in her flushed face, her bright eyes. “Your dreams didn’t trouble you?”

“No—I mean, yes, I did still have them,” she blustered, her tongue nearly tripping over itself in her exuberance. “Anyway, are you busy? Do you have some time to chat?”

“To chat,” Sesshoumaru said, peering at her.

“I have a few herbs to gather—why don’t you come along with me? I just have to swing back by the house to grab my basket.” Laughing a little, she shook her head at herself. “If I’d been thinking straight, I’d have brought it with me from the start. Oh well—guess the sleep loss is making me fuzzy.”

Already she was turning toward home. The task of herb gathering no longer seemed like a chore at the prospect of Sesshoumaru accompanying her. But as she took a few steps in that direction, she realized he wasn’t following. Glancing back at him over her shoulder, Kagome stopped when she saw him still standing rooted to the spot.

“It’s all right,” she said, flashing him a smile. “Inuyasha won’t mind. I spoke to him all about it last night.”

Sesshoumaru’s gaze sharpened. “Did you?” As Kagome’s smile faltered, he turned away. “If your condition is unchanged, there is nothing more we need discuss.”

The icy formality in his tone hit her like a whipcrack. Her lips parted in surprise as he strode away from her through the deserted yard. Frowning, she followed after.

“Sesshoumaru!” she called out to him, panting as she struggled to keep up with his long strides. “Sesshoumaru, wait!”

Just inside the forest, he halted. Winded even from this short burst of exertion, Kagome clutched instinctively at the swell of her stomach. Leaning her shoulder against a tree trunk, she fought to catch her breath.

“I…I don’t understand. I thought that this would be a good thing. We can speak freely now—”

“I do not want to speak with you now,” Sesshoumaru said, so coldly that she flinched. “Return to the village.”

Kagome stared at him in hurt and confusion. “I’m sorry if I’ve upset you. I just thought…this seemed like the best thing, to start being honest with him about us.”

Honest,” Sesshoumaru said, glaring at her as he turned. “You have a strange understanding of the word.”

Kagome tensed. “Going forward, I mean,” she said anxiously. “Of course I can’t tell him what happened between us in the past, but from this point on we can be open at least. Inuyasha, he—he’s okay with that, Sesshoumaru.”

“So, you’ve secured his unwitting consent to continue your liaisons,” the demon lord said, clipped and cutting. “How convenient for you.”

“That’s not fair,” she whispered, stricken.

“No, it isn’t.”

Kagome quailed, retreating a step as he stalked toward her. Her dress snagged against the bark of the tree at her back.

“You wish to be honest with my little brother?” Sesshoumaru’s eyes scorched into hers as he closed the short distance between them. “Call him here and tell him whose child you are carrying within you. Better yet,” he said ruthlessly, the heat of his body making her pulse skitter as he leaned in, “take me back to your home. Let him look on while I fuck you in your marriage bed. Then he will know the full truth of things.”

“Please,” Kagome said hoarsely, overwhelmed by his fierceness, his dizzying proximity. “Please, Sesshoumaru, don’t be cruel…”

“I am only responding in kind.” The corner of his mouth rose bitterly as he drew back from her. “If I am cruel, it is because you drive me to it, you little fool.”

There was no bite behind this last condemnation, no inflection in it at all. He said it as if it were a simple statement of fact, and because of this, it wounded Kagome that much more. Crushed, she crumpled in upon herself as Sesshoumaru turned his back to her and walked away—before releasing a short, snarled breath of exasperation and retracing his steps to her.

Blearily, she looked up at him. A gasp of shock escaped her as he pulled her to him and slanted his mouth against hers. Her hands flew to his arms. Her heart stuttered as his kiss abruptly deepened. Suddenly, she was adrift—drowning in a flood of raw and terrible sensation. Unmoored from her fragile principles, she was lost. The taste of his open mouth, the hungry graze of his fangs dashed away what remained of her better intentions.

“There is nothing honest in this,” he growled against her swollen lips, just before capturing them again. “It is shameful.” The rough stroke of his tongue against hers made her ache with desperate need. “Wrong.”

Kagome whimpered as he fit her fully to him, letting her feel through the rise of his armor all the forbidden lust for her he held. Torn between pushing him away and drawing him closer to the center of her own secret shame, she curled her fingers around the spiked edge of his chestplate and endeavored simply to breathe.

The clawed hands at her waist tightened to the point of pain. His lips grated against hers once more before he pushed her back from him. There wasn’t any force behind the shove, but Kagome stumbled nevertheless. Swallowing shakily, she watched as he turned his face from her and raked a hand through his tousled bangs. When his eyes met hers again, they were dark with regret.

Then, in a flicker, he was his stoic self once more.

“I’ve tasked Jakken with making inquiries on your behalf,” he said to her coolly, dispassionately, as though this heated encounter between them just now had never occurred. “If he has anything of worth to report, I will let you know.”

Weakly, Kagome nodded. Sliding down the scratchy trunk, she sat sprawled amongst the roots of the tree. Youki stirred the air as Sesshoumaru collected his power to him. His shadowed gaze lingered on her a moment more before he vanished in an orb of light.

  1. OH MY GOD! I WAS JUST TALKING ABOUT HOW LONG HE WILL LAST UNTIL HE SNAPPED AND GOD! I mean, not snap, snap, but he gave her a piece of his mind. And yeah, it is cruel :—( I mean, I know Kagome’s at fault, I’m not excusing her part in this whole ordeal, but she is PREGNANT with YOUR baby. The least thing to do is make sure not to stress her and treat her like that because you know, she might lose the baby??!! I’m starting to see that he also have some abusive and toxic tendency, and you agreed to the pact, Sesshoumaru, she didn’t force you! This is both you’re doing, you agreed to do some shameful and wrong thing because you desire your brother’s wife! Gosh, can I get in this fic and set everyone straight?!

I’m getting dizzy because I feel like I’m always switching sides, but I will always side with my main girl despite her flaws (not to mention she’s pregnant so that’s that!). Kagome is young and in love compared to these dogs who’s older and yet acts immaturely. In this case, just let the baby be born, and fight to death with Inuyasha until you’re satisfied. Just leave the baby out of it. Their ordeal started even before Kagome and Inuyasha’s marriage. It was bound to fail anyways.

And, oh, Sesshoumaru regretted his outburst, obviously (and because I’m soft and understanding, I know why he did that and I feel for him). Sooner or later, he wouldnt do what Kagome wants, but I do hope he will do the right thing. Although the ‘right’ thing right now is so complex and confusing. I wish they would all act like their age already. A baby is coming, their differences and their hatred can wait. And, please, Kagome, my main girl, leave the toxic relationship ASAP.

    1. Haha yeah, the “right” thing is not so clear in this situation… :/

With the circumstances as extreme as they are, even a guy like Sess is bound to snap at some point! Absolutely love reading your take on this chapter, Rain! Thanks for sharing and hope you’re having a great weekend! <3 <3

  2. TT______TT this hurts right in the feels. Kagome is a modern woman and needs to be honest. It’s going to come out eventually and be that much worse. Uhg. Poor Sesshoumaru. He’s all dark and twisty inside *Meredith Grey’s voice*

  3. Wow! Kagome totally had that coming. Sesshomaru is trying to pull back now that the deed is done and course correct, but Kagome can’t let him go because then she would just be stuck in her crappy marriage with Inuyasha. Thanks Char! This last chapter was smoking hot!

  4. She had it coming. How dare she think she can just go on with her farce of a marriage and expect Sesshoumaru to be her emotional support then put on the platonic relative act?

Just because he is a demon lord who seldom shows his emotions doesn’t mean he has none.

It was not just a sexual tryst. In the end, it became so much more.

She wants her happy family fantasy with Inuyasha then lies to him so she could still hang around Sesshoumaru. What is up with that? I don’t even know what they see in her. Can she even deal with a baby at this point?

    1. Exactly. The amount of selfishness… It’s exasperating. I kind of can’t wait until this is out in the open. I just hope the baby doesn’t suffer.

    2. As much sympathy as I feel for Kagome in this situation (self-inflicted or otherwise…), I couldn’t agree more…

“Just because he is a demon lord who seldom shows his emotions doesn’t mean he has none” – :’) …and this is why we love him so, isn’t it?

Thanks so much for sharing, Doug!! <3 <3

  5. YAS GURL sesshou tousled those gorgeous bangs! YAS! and that snarl before he turned his ass right back round! ARGH! it riles me up when he gets flustered, and kagome, she knows what’s up too cause she feels the same!

i had to catch up on all the goodies in my inbox cause i was hibernating from the fanfic world, but i’m back baby. rereading several chappie’s and familiarizing myself with the mood of your story once more, i’ve come to the conclusion that the ending won’t be sunshine & rainbows.

    i’m scrambling to prepare myself.

    1. Hahaha welcome back!! Glad you liked that snarl and bang tousle there 😉

Thanks for sharing, girl! Hope you enjoy the next chapters…!! <3

  6. Even when he snaps he’s restrained. Kagome really needs to stop being so ignorant about this. She’s so self-absorbed and assured that her actions are logical enough at the moment. She has no forethought. No ability to think ahead of her own wants. No need to do anything but attempt to bend people to her whims because she’s never had to deal with the consequences of her actions.

    Soon though. Soon.

    1. Yep, winter is coming all right XD

But seriously, lack of self-awareness is such a problem… Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts on this latest chapter!! Hope you enjoy the next! <3 <3

  7. after reading this chapter i felt torn. i mean sessho’s angry at her for finding a solution to be together and yet he didn’t have to agree to her proposal. he could have told her no and left, never to see her again. he did what he WANTED to do. of course kags is making mistakes when it comes to finding a solution to the dilemma she brought on herself by asking for the pact in the first place. she can’t have it BOTH ways. if she’s not in love with inuyasha, tell the TRUTH and LET HIM GO. sesshoumaru has to come to the conclusion that he always wanted kagome and he didn’t care how he got her. i just hope inuyasha realizes that he is dependent on kagome, but he doesn’t love her like a man should love a woman. in the end i hope each one of them comes out on the other side happy and content with their choices. keep up the great writing. c’ya’

    1. I feel torn too…it’s such a messy situation! At any point things could have been handled differently (better?) and the whole picture would be changed. But such is life, right? lol

Anyway, thanks so much for sharing your reactions! So glad you liked the chapter – have a great rest of the weekend and hope you enjoy the next!! <3
